1990-2012
It was a bumpy ride ~
a rollercoaster of emotions, really
being a Boston Bruins fan
seeing great teams
filled with so many good guys
with an exemplary work ethic,
resilience aplenty and true grit.
Os herois da minha juventude!
And just because I was their fan,
their quest for excellence became
an epic saga!
A saga that spanned decades;
as in 1990, they were the best team
in the league - but fell in the finals.
They were even better
just a few short years later
but were robbed blind (1993)
depriving true heroes such as
Ray Bourque, Cam Neely,
Dave Christian, Randy Burridge, Dave Reid,
Glen Wesley and Dave Poulin
(to name but a few of them)
of a much-deserved championship -
and then it was on to the "noughties"
a new era (2000-2005) alas
when they retooled their
status of contender
around a supposed franchise player
(Joe 90 aka Joe Thornton)
and it was fraught with disappointment.
And then it was a rebuilding period
with a former player as GM
(Mike O'Connell)
and he was to pave the way
for the next one who took,
therefore, all the credit
for wrapping up what he
had actually initiated:
building the team
that could have/should have
won it all in 2009... 2010...
but only finally prevailed
in 2011.
As an underdog. In Vancouver;
Cam Neely's old town,
and he was back with the team
for the much-awaited ultimate triumph -
as the team's PRESIDENT!

Yeah... Well... Never knew MARIA was such a huge FAN...
(many thanks to
Aqua Anna for, ah, pointing that out to me!)
VIDEO
She had never struck me as... that kind of girl, know what I mean?
But that's another story!
VIDEO
VIDEO
VIDEO
It all seemed perfectly-timed;
wasn't the Mayan calendar
predicting the end of all
in 2012...?
The Bruins would be the
FINAL CHAMPIONS
then...!!!
So... no, it wasn't the end of the world
(only of the Canucks' aspirations;
and the Sedin twins' careers there!
But that is another story...)
But then the Bruins had built a
juggernaut of a team:
one that was primed to
dominate in an otherwise
parity-laden league - dominate
and win multiple championships
for the next five to ten years...!
Not quite the way it went, hmm?
But we will always have
*2011*
when, finally, the good guys
won it ALL
oh yes ~ I always will

REMEMBRANCE DAY
VETERANS' DAY
and the 100th Anniversary
of the Peace Treaty
-l'Armistice, signed in France in 1918-
that ended the Great War...
VIDEO
And on a day such as this
I personally cannot help but to think
that there is so much truth to that:
EVERYTHING
*IS*
LUMINOUS
Even the bad stuff that happens to us...
Yes, even the bad stuff!
VIDEO
You learn from every experience --- good or bad ---
you grow ever forward, towards the Light -
you mature, you acquire, you never lose;
verily, folks, absolutely everything
truly is... LUMINOUS!
I used to say...
"live and let live"
(you know you did... you know you did... you know you DID!)
But in this ever-changing world in which we live in,
(it) makes you give it a try...
LIVE AND LET DIE!
No - that's not it!
VIDEO
Yikes - the opening image is, almost one-to-one,
the spitting image and fearful preview of what awaits
Boris Leskin 's character in the film we will discuss shortly -
just read on... all the way to the comments section, that is!
R.I.P. Grandfather... as you allegedly can!
Rather, I used to say this:
EVERYTHING IS
EPHEMERAL!
But then, some chaps might simply not get it
AT ALL: "ephemeral" being such a "big word" y'know...
Not part of the common man's vocabulary -
most of the time!
PLUS a great many might prefer
(and might still remember)
the Matt Good spin on it:
VIDEO
VIDEO
VIDEO
1997 is a long time ago, though -
not as long ago as 1918, but still...!
Automatic is too... mechanical.
Heaven Forbid that it ever does
define "everything"...
And if we are to invoke "old stuff"
(and such is the point here - duh)
and some sort of definition of
"everything" therefore,
then let us point to a fine film
that went under the radar,
somehow, and unjustly so,
one could somewhat add:
and it is not sucky either:
rather, it is
close enough to luminous, eh?
Yes it was, but...
where I first mentioned the film, just about
when it was released - in 2005!
Sunflowers - sunflowers, everywhere!
A tale of two collectors, ultimately:
and, I would say, foremost
Luminous Lista
also known as
the one character in the film
who truly brings about a sense of
illumination... reverence and
remembrance.

There are several ladies of note, somehow,
in this vastly male-dominated cast and film:
aside from the luminous Laryssa Lauret,
- in her lone film credit, according to IMDB!
And then there is "Sammy Davis Jr. Jr."
--- don't ask... see the film!
This is a film -and a novel, first- with a very strong,
devoted following - but it definitely isn't
a large one, by any stretch of the imagination.
Whether the masses know it or not, though,
it is a true masterpiece.
(Not one without flaws, mind you; nothing is ever perfect
as everything is, also, imperfect in this world,
on this side of things. See the comments section...
But this is the best example of what we are
meaning to convey, overall here -
so it has to do.)

Though it was far from being a profitable film,
this film is the best example of what
Warner Independent Films,
a division of Warner Brothers, can achieve.
It has inspired so many - despite doing so poorly
at the box office - and subsequently...
It is the finest directorial debut anyone
could ever dream of achieving, also;
that of Liev Schreiber -
who only got back to directing recently,
on some episodes of his Ray Donovan series.
(And, what a coincidence - we just saw him
hosting SNL for the first time in his life -
LAST NIGHT...!)
It is one of the best literary adaptations around, too.
And its message -
that " everything is illuminated
IN THE LIGHT OF THE PAST"
is what saudade is all about... in a way.
Those sunflowers omnipresent in every promotional shot
for the film - as they are at the core of its most
luminous scenes indeed - adorning the dress worn by
actress Laryssa Lauret, at the premiere (above)...
She had been quite the mainstay on television and
with choice movie roles for decades -
none choicier than this part of ever so slightly listless
yet truly luminous "Lista"...
truly a crowning moment
in a great career.
At the very end of this "Everything Is Illuminated" film
the end credits are enlivened by this fine song
sung by Eastern European sensation
and his gypsy punk/folk band Gogol Bordello:
the song is
"Start Wearing Purple"
VIDEO
Gogol proudly bears the name
of one of the finest quills
to have ever penned anything in the Russian language:
master of the Cyrillic alphabet and author of "
VIY "
that I always ranked above even the likes of
Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky!
(Anybody who knows me knows it:
I admire anyone able to master that good old Cyrillic!)
And this modern Gogol frontman is a fine quill, too:
with his repertoire of soulful tracks
such as Sun Is On My Side ...
(hey - the sunflowers are proof of that, right?)
VIDEO
"When Universe(s) Collide "...
(pluralized that for him: I am thinking
it is what he meant...!)
VIDEO
(His English is not so... premium, as he would say!
You know? Well, you would know...
If you had watched "Everything Is Illuminated"!)
VIDEO
"12 Illumination "
VIDEO
...his Supertheory of Supereverything is some kind
of a luminous thing, too...
VIDEO
Yevhen proves his luminescence, though
with this track alone: We Rise Again .
VIDEO
Well - OK...
maybe his collaboration with Regina Spektor
helps immensely, too!
VIDEO
VIDEO
and invoking Natalie Imbruglia
(and obscure band Ednaswap - really)
also helps!
VIDEO
Yevhen is a SOUL WARRIOR...
VIDEO
And, as such, he is
"UNDESTRUCTIBLE"
(bad English and all!)
VIDEO
YES... We should all
start wearing
PURPLE!

Tia Margarida
My dear, dear aunt...
Tia Margarida
de São Miguel, Açores...
.
You gifted me
one of my most precious,
favorite toys of all-time
I never thanked you enough for it.
As I never thanked you enough for
being a second mother for me...
that lengthy car ride...
all the treats - all the laughs!
Being such a beautiful audience!
Oh, how I think fondly of those days...
so often wished they had not ended.
Other souvenirs from those joyful times include:
Your sweetness and kindness
-the glue that held the clan together-
your smile, always present;
I always held you in such
You do not know it,
but you made me love
that city so much
I love the ocean
in great part thanks to you too;
being there, touching the Atlantic,
the Açores, Martha's Vineyard,
all inspired by your retelling
of the magnificent domain
that ended on a cliff,
with the ocean's waves
crashing upon the rocks
- and all the lagosta...!
You made me discover
a whole lot of characters
I had never heard of before
- at such an early age, too
VIDEO
VIDEO
You were the best -
you are the best
- aunt, sister, sister-in-law,
mother, wife, role-model,
mother-in-law,
and grandmother...
At one time,
you were the family's very own
Donna Reed!
I would have made such a casting,
if time constraints were not...!
VIDEO
You inspired so many:
VIDEO
VIDEO
VIDEO
Most of all I know Him
in good part because of you
I know your brethren believe
you are asleep now...
In that deepest of sleeps
from which one awakes
only at the sound of
a most ominous Trumpet
on That Day of Awe...
Me... I believe you are with GOD
- with your husband...
reunited with Paula...
with Carlos...
with my father too...
your parents, your loved ones...
everyone who has departed
and now will wait for that Day -
when we will all be reunited
after everyone's reached completion
of this test called earthly life.
He Called your name, this time...
You are with Your Saviour.
Greatest of Amazing Things:
I was listening to this song,
on what would come to be
your final night on Earth:
I was listening to it non-stop
(and, as you will quickly come
to realize, such is the nature of
the video uploaded to YouTube
by one whose faith is,
quite evidently,
as great as hers...)
I was listening to this song
as she was about to be with Him.
And I think she liked
-make that: adored -
this song very, very much:
VIDEO
We will see each other again,
cara tia Margarida -
but not yet... not yet.
