The Archies' Sugar Sugar hit song from the Sixties celebrates her memory - how fitting indeed since the Sixties are the decade in which Farrah actually debuted, instantly overmatched by the likes of Sharon Tate and Françoise Dorléac in her category, internationally-speaking, but she clearly outmatched them both in turn with her enduring appeal due to its evolution and sheer longer lifespan... She truly took close to a full decade to reach the zenith of her fame, the apex of her brand of perfection, the summum of her popularity - a type of popularity that one will never see again. Everyone, and we do mean EVERYONE, wanted to have a Farrah poster just like this one, up on their walls:
No TV star, movie star or music "icon" since has ever come close to be as popular as Farrah Fawcett was in the years of 1975-1976-1977...
All the way into the Eighties, where others timidly TRIED to capitalize on the "Farrah formula for fame" - posing for and releasing posters, endorsing products and doing commercials, maybe posing nude (if you're a hot chick!) - Farrah remained the uncontested queen. Paradoxically, her popularity started to wane only when she began to prove her acting mettle, culminationg with her acclaimed role in The Burning Bed.
Perhaps all the nostalgics (and mindless masses that adored her unblemished golden California girl, with the infectious smile reeking of youthful innocence, golden locks and curves to die for) didn't like to see her become so firmly entrenched in "reality" - and its most dreadful aspects...
Real life was even more dreadful than "The Burning Bed" - not to say that the realities described in that book (and then the movie which starred Farrah) were not horrid, but there are even worse situations out there: one of them comes with the c-word...
That which took away Farrah's infectious radiant smile...
Nevertheless, we will all make abstraction of all these sad elements, always - and remember her as the most glowing of all Charlie's Angels, past, present or future... Forever Farrah!
