THIS is the action figure that started it all for me...!
AQUAMAN - circa 1976
This Pocket Action Hero didn't leave my pocket for YEARS...
(Correction: tis truly a Comic Action Hero, aye!)
He went with me everywhere I went;
to PORTUGAL, when I finally visited my grand-mother there
and threaded upon the land of my hot-tempered ancestors!
He went with me all over North America -
spent summers swimming in the pool with me -
and, of course, he would also wage battle against villainy
while I was simply soaking in the bath tub!
And then came a somber day
when it was all just too much for the Pocket Action Hero...
Some wear and tear on his plastic constitution
-along with the simple fact that he was NOT supposed to
go everywhere the "actual Aquaman" would easily access-
made the toy unravel before my very eyes!
In the midst of battle, as I recall...
I was heartbroken.
My Pocket Action Hero - my favorite -
was totally and irremediably out of commission.
In fact, he was incapacitated for good.
I had lost my best childhood playmate - ever!
(Because other kids were annoying sometimes -
the Aquaman here pictured above never was!
The best playmate is the one that never annoys!
A playmate that battled evil wherever I'd tell him to
and ran afoul of the same crap as I did -
which, in those days, were simply instances
when my bedtime came too early
or the dessert wasn't ice cream! *lol*)
Over the years, I acquired other Aquamen of fortune -
there were many throughout the years too:
the MEGO original, the Super Powers classic,
the Pocket Super Hero that is pictured below...
None would ever replace, in my heart, my first hero!
Not even the super-hero character himself,
in whatever media he's appeared in since!
