late night television, even on free TV,
could be found programming very daring films!
"Daring" that is, in the old-fashioned way!
And, lo and behold, there was just one such film
RIGHT THERE, for me to watch...!
An "old film" by all standards applicable:
one that, amazingly as surprisingly enough, had NOT
been censored prior to broadcast there...
ON THE VERY SAME CHANNEL known to be,
during its daytime and prime time hours,
such a wholesome FAMILY-FRIENDLY channel!
Such a programming decision was daring alright!
The movie in question had a very adult subject;
grim one, at that! It featured a lot of nudity -
(what's so special about mammaries, right?) with
just passing glances "below the belt" only, but still...!
This was daring, for its time, I tell you!
And it featured a particular scene...

Now she was already at the zenith of her evolution; she'd
already become all that she could have ever hoped to be.
A limited talent, as far as an actress, she was at her most
desirable as a woman in the early 1970s -
as she would have had to be in order to be able to
successfully steal Abhorrent Alain away from the likes of
Romy Schneider... but that is another story.
THE MOVIE WAS "BLUEBEARD " INDEED...
And Richard Burton had been cast in the title role;
surrounded by a bevy of beauties like they were,
at that particular time, all across Europe...
The lone American invited: Raquel Welch!
(Joey Heatherton is British - no?)
The scandalous Karin Schubert was there...
The Italianas that were willing were Virna Lisi
and Agostina Belli... (Sophia & Gina said NO!)
(And CC was too wholesome for this!!!)
(Marilu Tolo? She an FBI, too? Who knows?)
But note the pairing up of Sybil and Nathalie...
Because they were essentially there to act out
what none of the other actresses would have
signed up for, almost, in those days:
a lesbian scene in a major film!
But such a poor lesbian scene it was: ND's character is just,
basically, seeking expert advice on how to seduce her man
(not knowing about his libido problems and murderous
tendencies either) and what does she do except summon
the local prostitute to show her some moves or give
her some "tips" on how to keep him, ah, interested...
After a basic lesson, the teacher (!) tells her student
that it is practice time ...!!! But what practice is that;
their lips barely brush each other's, the camera cuts
to him, spying on them from behind the wall...!!
There are moaning sounds (I do not recall actual
kissing sounds, no) but that is it! To her credit, ND
delivers a tantalizing line meant to drive the boys wild:
"ohh, this is so good; if I had known...!"
implying she would have gone for women sooner?
Imagine the target audience (hormonal adolescents
like me!) who are hearing this... imagining all this...
because ALL of it is left to the imagination here!
Imagine how worked up the audience is!!!
And then it ends -brutally- like this:
SPOILER ALERT (not really - right?)
they both die in their (barely) sapphic embrace
a still of which was used as a LOBBY CARD at the time!!!
(That is for its theatrical release - duh.
Note the absence of blood - that is appreciated!
Gore instead of erotica, when one exXxpects the latter...
It would have been too much - way too much!
Years later, the still is used to promote the film on TV!
Because it was still better (somehow) than using... the next poster!

That scene alone caused the most harm, one could say
(though the other sadistic ways that Bluebeard assassinates
or tries to assassinate (one does get away) the other six women
are sickening to watch - and, then, on those occasions, nothing much
is left to the imagination at all...! Imagine that...!)
it all left a latent sub-imprint on the young boy's mind here...
If there was any curiosity about "what lesbians do" - it could have
been assassinated, too! Or it became another type of trauma.
No, the little curious (and horny) boy that I was
will never forgive the director of this film...
